Backstage News on Why Trish Stratus & Lita’s WWE Evolution Matches Were Changed

As announced last night on WWE Raw, the original plans for Hall of Famers Trish Stratus and Lita at the upcoming all-women’s WWE Evolution pay-per-view have been changed in a major way.

It was originally advertised that Stratus would face Alexa Bliss, while Lita would reignite an old rivalry by facing off against 19-year veteran Mickie James. During an in-ring segment on Monday’s episode of Raw it was confirmed that instead, the two legends would team up for the first time in fourteen years, as Stratus and Lita will now face Bliss and James in a tag team match.

According to Dave Meltzer on this morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio, there was never actually any plan for the advertised singles bouts to take place. The plan from the very start was reportedly for a tag team match to take place, but the feeling was they needed a big-time singles match on the card to help push tickets when the event was first announced.

Because WWE had to wait until this week to announce the Ronda Rousey vs. Nikki Bella match, the idea was to try and get as many early buys as they could using the idea of Trish Stratus working her first singles match in years against the best heel in the modern women’s division.
