Close early matches, tough draws end SJU’s season at NCAA Championships

LA CROSSE, Wis. – All four Saint John’s University wrestlers went 0-2 at the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships on Friday, March 10, in La Crosse, Wis.

Senior Teddy Erickson (Annandale, Minn.) and sophomore Luke Dodd (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) both lost their pig-tail matches with heart-breaking, one-point decisions at 165 (7-6) and 184 pounds (11-10), respectively. Both ended their seasons with major-decision losses to the ninth-ranked wrestlers in their respective weight classes. Erickson (16-11 record) fell to Wartburg’s (Iowa) Andrew Steiert (16-5) and Dodd (18-11 record) lost to Cortland State’s (N.Y.) Deuly Espinal (13-5).

Senior Robert Tait (Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) dropped his first-round match to top-ranked Riley Lefever of Wabash (Ind.), the reigning three-time national champion at 184 pounds, via fall (0:36) at 197. Tait (13-6 record) ended his career with a loss via technical fall (15-0) to the Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Devin Mahnke. He lost to Mahnke by a close 4-2 score Feb. 25 at the NCAA West Regional.

Freshman Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) lost his first match via technical fall (18-2) at 133 pounds to the second seed, third-ranked Nathan Pike of NYU, and ended his national-tournament appearance with an 11-9 loss to Wabash’s Owen Doster Friday night.
