Doris Day Photos: Remembering The Life Of An American Icon

American icon Doris Day has died at the age of 97 years old at her home in Carmel Valley, California.

Day is remembered as a staple of American pop culture even though her last film,”With Six You Get Eggroll,” came out in 1968. After beginning her career as a recording star in the 1940s and lasting for more than two decades as a highly successful film actress, the versatile star remained a vibrant symbol for the good old times of innocence.

The wholesome image portrayed by Doris Day in her acting and singing career evolved into passionate activism work in her later years. Day was a vocal champion for animal welfare and launched the the Doris Day Animal Foundation in 1978, which still exists today. In 2004, President Bush presented Day with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her pioneering work devoted to animal rights.
