Poland’s Kaczyński: We won’t slow down our reforms

Leader of Law and Justice party says there is ‘no way Poland would hand in a decision on the court reforms to the Court of Justice.’

The head of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party (PiS), Jarosław Kaczyński, said Friday that the “program of deep changes in our country will not slow down, on the contrary.”

“There cannot be any talk about reaching an agreement with powers that for years treated Poland as their own private loot,” Kaczyński told Polish daily Gazeta Polska Codziennie, Reuters reported.

The European Commission in December launched its Article 7 procedure against Poland, accusing it of going against the rule of law by, among other things, making changes to the judiciary. The procedure could end up with Warsaw losing its EU voting rights.

“There is, of course, no way Poland would hand in a decision on the court reforms to the Court of Justice, this is our internal competence guaranteed by EU law,” Kaczyński said.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said earlier in January that Poland’s dispute with the European Commission was a “misunderstanding” and called for more dialogue, Reuters said.
