Marvel’s Kevin Feige Confirms Black Widow Movie Won’t be R-Rated
Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has confirmed in an interview with Comicbook.com that the standalone Black Widow movie will have a PG-13 rating, despite previous rumors that it might be R-rated.
Feige was asked if the rumor of Black Widow being R-rated could be officially quashed, in which he responded, “Yes. Correct.”
“It never was going to be [R-rated],” Feige said. “Somebody writes, ‘I hear it’s R-rated!’ And then everybody writes it up.”

Details of the untitled Black Widow film have remained under wraps, with Scarlett Johansson confirmed to reprise her role as the Russian spy turned SHIELD agent. Any involvement from other Avengers characters are currently unknown, but it has been reported that Cait Shortland will be directing the film, with a script from Jac Schaeffer.
Talks of a solo Black Widow movie have been circulating since Johansson started having consistent roles in the Marvel films, including Iron Man 2, The Avengers, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Feige spoke about the lack of female leads in films back in 2014, saying that he hoped to have more equal representation of females on-screen, “sooner rather than later.”
Earlier in 2014, Johansson spoke with IGN about her frequent conversations with Marvel for a Black Widow film, which she said, “It’s something we talk about all the time. Marvel is certainly listening, and working with them for several years now you see they respond to the audience demand for something like that.”
Johansson had also added in her thoughts about the perception and possibilities of female superheroes in films.
“I think it would be exciting to be a part of a franchise or a standalone film where the female superhero used those opportunities as more than moments to stop, pause and look sexy, and actually have a lot of a real depth to the story.”

While talking to Comicbook.com, Feige also spoke of the status of future Marvel films and when they will be released, saying the studio has loose plans for the next five to six years, but is waiting until after Spider-Man: Far From Home releases, to announce the next slate of movies.
“As we’ve been doing for years, we aren’t going to announce anything post Avengers: Endgame or Spider-Man [Far From Home] until post Endgame and Spider-Man,” Feige said.
“There are no mandates to make any more than two films a year,” Feige continued. “As we’ve seen in the last couple years, when it naturally happens and when there are ideas and when there are teams ready to go, we’re not going to hold something back. We’ll make it.”

Some of the Marvel films that are said to be in the line up in the foreseeable future include the Black Widow movie, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 – which has been confirmed to be using James Gunns’ original script – and sequels to Black Panther and Doctor Strange.
The next three MCU films are Captain Marvel, which will premiere on March 8, Avengers: Endgame on April 26, and Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 5.
