Marseille fans banned from Nice city centre ahead of Monaco clash

Marseille face Monaco at the Stade Louis II on Sunday night in the final match before the World Cup break. Fearing clashes just down the coast in Nice, local authorities have banned away fans from congregating in the city centre, report Nice-Matin.

Sunday’s match worries the authorities, who fear clashes between rival supporters. The focus, however, isn’t on clashes between Marseille and Monaco fans, but between the former set of supporters and OGC Nice fans.

Anticipating issues, the authorities have therefore taken the decision to ban Marseille fans from the city centre ahead of the match. The ban comes into place at 10am on Sunday morning and runs until midnight. To justify the strict measure, the authorities have referenced fan trouble between the two sets of fans during last season’s game at the Allianz Riviera. During that match, Dimitri Payet was hit with a bottle. The Marseille attacker threw the bottle back, leading to a pitch invasion from the home fans and a subsequent suspension of the match.
