'I look up to him' – Sancho inspired by Pulisic success
The English winger says the American has shown a path for young players at Borussia Dortmund
Jadon Sancho says that he is inspired by Christian Pulisic, a player that showed him a path forward at Borussia Dortmund.
With English prospects still generally opting to fight it out on home soil, Sancho decided to join Borussia Dortmund in 2017 after struggling to break through at Manchester City.
Like Pulisic, Sancho faced the decision of leaving the comfort of home to fight for a new opportunity and, to this point, that decision has worked out in his favour.
Sancho has experienced a meteoric rise this campaign, having scored seven goals in 26 appearances after featuring 12 times last season.
“The club had shown with a player like Christian Pulisic that they were going in the right way, playing youngsters and giving them a chance. He came from the same situation as me, leaving his family behind,” Sancho told ESPN.
“He was so young, and he was brave enough. America is a lot further away than England and he’s taken a bigger step than I have done. How he’s handled that, what he does on the pitch, his mentality [towards] football, it’s just crazy. The passion he has. I admire him.”
Pulisic has experienced his fair share of success, too, having earned a £58 million (€64m/$73m) transfer to Chelsea that will see him move to London this summer following a half-season loan with the German club.
The U.S. national team winger, who scored in this week’s DFB-Pokal defeat to Werder Bremen, has made 117 total appearances for Dortmund’s senior team since joining as a youth player in 2015 and breaking through in 2016.
“He’s an outstanding player, I really do look up to him. Him going away from home shows that you have to do things to get out of your comfort zone, sometimes,” Sancho said.
“I feel it’s worked for him and it’s working for me
