Pulisic reveals his best position & admits he consulted Aubameyang before Chelsea move

The American forward has revealed the thinking behind his move to west London and his ambitions for the future

Christian Pulisic has revealed he consulted Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before deciding to join Chelsea.

Pulisic signed for Chelsea in January for £58 million ($74m), before re-joining Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.

The 20-year-old has now completed his campaign with Dortmund, and has been in England this week before heading back to his homeland for this summer’s Gold Cup with the U.S. national team.

Speaking about the move, Pulisic says he spoke to Gunners forward Aubameyang about London and the Premier League before committing to the transfer.

Pulisic spent two years playing alongside Aubameyang at Signal-Iduna Park before the Gabon international moved to Emirates Stadium in January 2018.

“When the possibility of my transfer to Chelsea came around, I reached out to him,” Pulisic told the Evening Standard. “Even though Pierre-Emerick left Dortmund for Arsenal, we remained in contact. I have spoken with him on and off ever since he moved here.

“I asked him how it was in London and stuff. He loves it here. He is a big city kind of guy, you can see that and he has told me about a few places to go see.

“It was a very good friendship when we played for Dortmund together for a few years. He was there when I first broke into the first team and we had a nice link up on the field.

“He taught me a lot. That was one of the coolest things about him. He’s a very humble guy and perhaps people don’t know that about him.

“He was a lot older than me but took me under his wing. Not all older players are as welcoming or as accepting when a young guy comes in.

“But he was always very kind and wanted to be there if I had anything to ask. He went out of his way to help me. I will always be thankful for that.”

Pulisic’s arrival at Stamford Bridge is expected to coincide with the departure of Eden Hazard, who has been widely tipped to move to Real Madrid.

Pulisic has already dismissed claims he is replacing Hazard in west London but does admit he can play in similar positions to the Belgium international.

“I think I can be very effective on either of the wings,” Pulisic told Chelsea’s website. “I had the chance to play on both at Dortmund but I have experience of playing as a no.10 with the national team as well.

“Really, any of the attacking positions I can be comfortable in. I was most comfortable on the wings at Dortmund.

“I like this system [that Chelsea play]. It is a very free-flowing, attacking system that should suit my style well.”

Despite his young age, Pulisic insists he is not overawed by the move to Chelsea and has backed them to compete for silverware next season.

“I won’t be intimidated. At Dortmund we had experience of competing with Bayern Munich the whole time,” he added.

“Obviously Bayern have a very strong team, but we were so close to winning the championship this year.

“At Chelsea, we are going to go into the next season with confidence, we want to go in right away from the start and compete to the best of our ability. That’s what we are going to try to do.”
