Melania Trump makes first public appearance as her husband says she has ‘had a little rough patch’
Melania Trump has made her first public appearance with her husband in 27 days, bringing to an end speculation about her health and whereabouts.
Mrs Trump accompanied the president to a briefing about the hurricane season, which began on June 1, and did not speak but was given hearty applause by the assembled Cabinet members.
Mr Trump opened the session by thanking the first lady for being present.
“She had a little rough patch but she’s doing great,” he said.
“The people love you. Thank you, honey.”
Mrs Trump’s whereabouts have been a source of speculation ever since she disappeared from public view almost a month ago.
The White House said that she had been admitted to hospital for minor kidney surgery, and remained in hospital. But doctors on cable news expressed surprise at her extended stay in hospital for a treatment that is usually carried out in a day.
Mr Trump was enraged by the DC chatter, and tweeted, hours before the event, that she had been treated in an "unfair and vicious" manner.
Mrs Trump has consistently had a higher approval rating than her husband, with 57pc of Americans thinking she is doing a good job.
