No. 12 Augustana poised for NCAA Super Region Three Championships this weekend

No. 12 Augustana wrestling (18-5, 7-1 NSIC) is sending 10 wrestlers to the NCAA Super Region Three Championships in Mankato, Minn. on Feb. 28 and March 1 to see who will earn bids to the NCAA Championships.

Augustana ended the regular season with a tough, but promising loss to No. 1 St. Cloud State to take second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The Vikings have three nationally-ranked wrestlers as TJ North remains at the No. 1 spot at 125-pounds, followed by Jayd Docken staying at the No. 5 spot for a third consecutive week, followed by Jeremiah Peterson checking in at No. 7.

With the most wins in school history, Augustana recorded 18 dual wins this season for a sixth straight year they have hit double-digit victories.

The top four wrestlers of each weight class at the NCAA Super Region III Championships will earn a berth into the NCAA Championships held in St. Louis, Mo. on March 13 and 14.

Super Region Three Projected Lineup

Augustana wrestlers will travel to Mankato, Minn. to try and place in the top-four to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships on March 13-14.

The Vikings’ assigned super region includes four of the top-10 teams in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches’ Poll and a total of eight teams currently ranked nationally.

Of the 80 individual wrestlers ranked, 34 hail from Super Region III including four No. 1-ranked wrestlers in their class with one returning defending national champions at 149-pounds.

Class-by-class, here is a breakdown of who will oppose Augustana this weekend.

  • 125 Pounds: Augustana’s lone returning regional champion, and national runner up, North holds the top region ranking and is No. 1 in the country and his top competition will be from fifth-ranked Garrett Evans of Ouachita Baptist (Ark.). North has defeated two Super Region 3 wrestlers he faced earlier this season. Starting with Marcos Tamayo of Lindenwood with a 2-0 decision, followed by a sudden victory of 5-3 over Da’Wayne Robertson of MSU-Moorhead.
  • 133 Pounds: Morgan Engbrecht enters this weekend with a 11-10 record and holds the eighth spot in the Super Region Three. Engbrecht pinned currently sixth-ranked Blake Bosch of MSU-Moorhead on Jan. 21.
  • 141 Pounds: Returning to the lineup, Peterson will still have to compete with three top-five wrestlers in Ouachita Baptist. Lindenwood (Mo.) and St. Cloud State’s 141-pounders.
  • 149 Pounds: The 149-pound weight class in Super Region III is hands-down the toughest class in any region with the top-three nationally-ranked wrestlers all coming from Augustana’s region. Jacob Anderson will be tasked with top-ranked Keenan Hagerty of Maryville, No. 2 Frank Cagnina of Central Missouri and No. 3 Terrel Wilbourn of Lindenwood (Mo.).
  • 157 Pounds: Currently ranked No. 1 and undefeated Clint Poster of St. Cloud State headlines the class in which Shawn Hatlestad or Bradyn Neises will try to earn a spot to the NCAA Championship — the class features three ranked wrestlers.
  • 165 Pounds: Four wrestlers from the Super Region Three are currently ranked in the top-six. Parker Swanson will once against battle against Gabe Fogarty of St. Cloud State and Cody Quinn of Minnesota State
  • 174 Pounds: Tim Weber or Logan Henning will be in the bracket that features two national wrestlers from Maryville (Mo.), Southwest Minnesota State, Ouachita Baptist, and Central Missouri
  • 184 Pounds: Aero Amo ranks No. 6 in the region, and will match up against four wrestlers that are currently ranked nationally. Battling Amo will be national ranked No. 1 Dallas Smith of Ouachita Baptist, and No.2 Blake Sorensen of Upper Iowa.
  • 197 Pounds: No. 5 Docken, will likely face familiar foes at 197 pounds. Docken is a three-time national qualifier and an 2013 All-American.
  • 285 Pounds: Three of the top eight nationally-ranked heavyweights hail from the Vikings’ region. Michael Lowman ranks fourth in the regional rankings and will see three wrestlers ranked in the top eight nationally.

Augustana jumps back in the NCAA poll at 12th, three Vikings ranked

Augustana jumped back into the NCAA Division II top 20 poll on Feb. 25 checking in at the No. 12 spot.

The Vikings earned 61 points, while St. Cloud State remains at the No. 1 spot with 154 points.

North remains the one spot at 125-pounds after improving his season record to 20-3 after beating seventh-ranked Tim Prescott of St. Cloud State.

Peterson jumped back into the national rankings after improving his season record to 13-3, with only two losses coming from Division II wrestlers, one from Division I.

With a 24-3 record on the season, Docken remains at the No. 5 spot latest national rankings with his only Division II loss coming from fourth-ranked Kenny Breaux of Lindenwood.

The Coach

Jason Reitmeier is in his 12th season as the head coach of the Augustana wrestling program.

Reitmeier owns a career record of 135-62 in dual meets (48-23 in conference duals) which ranks second at Augustana

Reitmeier has coached two conference championship teams, two region championship teams and led seven teams to top-10 finishes at the NCAA Tournament while coaching 43 All-Americans at Augustana.
