SDSU’s Carlson victorious at Bison Open
FARGO, N.D. – Freshman Zac Carlson claimed the 174-pound title and Cameron Sykora reached the championship of the 125-pound weight class to lead a contingent of South Dakota State University wrestlers Saturday at the Bison Open.
Carlson, a native of Kerkhoven, Minnesota, scored a 7-5 sudden-victory overtime decision over Tyler Harringon of North Dakota State in the title bout. After receiving a first-round bye, Carlson recorded a 15-0 technical fall victory over Dylan Huttunen of Minnesota State, Moorhead, and advanced to the finals with a pin of North Dakota State’s Carter Nielsen in the semifinals.
Sykora, a freshman from Wheaton, Minnesota, also dominated his first two opponents en route to the finals. He scored an 11-2 major decision over North Dakota State’s Arthur Payne and added a 16-0 technical fall over Minnesota State, Moorhead’s Jonathan Lewis. In the championship match, NDSU’s Joshua Rodriguez defeated Sykora by major decision, 20-7.
Four other first- or second-year Jackrabbit wrestlers ended the day as placewinners. Brett Bye turned in a third-place finish by going 3-1 on the day. After dropping a 5-4 decision to Ricards Avakovs of Minot State (N.D.) in the semifinals, Bye came back with a pin of Levi Schonebaum (unattached) and secured third place with a 7-5, sudden-victory overtime decision against Paul Michaelson of the University of Mary (N.D.).
Caleb Ward won his first two matches, including an 18-0 technical fall in his first-round match, to reach the 197-pound semifinals. Ward finished with a fourth-place finish after going 3-2 on the day.
Rounding out the Jackrabbits’ placewinners were 133-pounder Tyler Pieper and 157-pounder Lucas Eastman, who each recorded sixth-place finishes.
Bison Open Results
Another group of SDSU wrestlers is scheduled to compete Sunday at the Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa. The Jackrabbits resume dual action Nov. 21 by hosting nationally ranked Virginia Tech.
