Augsburg dominates in 37-4 win at Saint John’s

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Winning nine of 10 bouts, including six by bonus-point margins, the No. 8-ranked Augsburg College wrestling team scored a 37-4 victory over Saint John’s University in a dual meet on Sunday afternoon at Sexton Arena.

Augsburg, the defending NCAA Division III national champion and No. 8-ranked team in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, dominated the dual, claiming two pins and four major decisions among its nine victories.

Austin Boniface (JR, Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) improved to 15-7 on the season with his fifth pin of the campaign, a 1:39 match ender over Robert Tait at 174 pounds. Boniface is now 40-20 in his Augsburg career with 17 pins.

Logan Hortop (JR, Faribault, Minn.) also claimed a pin at 197. Dominating his bout with Nick Pegelow, Hortop converted a pin at the 5:21 mark to improve to 17-11 on the season. Hortop now has 11 bonus-point victories (six pins, four major decisions, one technical fall) this season.

No. 1-ranked and defending heavyweight national champion Donny Longendyke (JR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) scored a 10-2, major-decision win over Colin Fisher to close the match. Now 21-2 on the season, Longendyke now has 16 bonus-point wins (14 pins, one major decision) this season.

Longendyke is now 65-4 in his Augsburg career and 105-25 in his collegiate career. Of his 105 wins, 79 are bonus-point victories (59 pins, three technical falls, 17 major decisions).

Sam Bennyhoff (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) continued his impressive debut campaign with the Auggies, improving to 15-3 on the season with a 10-2, major-decision win over Mike Pleski at 133. Bennyhoff now has nine bonus-point wins (four pins, one technical fall, four major decisions) on the season.

Rashad Kennedy (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), who returned to the Augsburg lineup at the semester break, improved to 10-2 on the season with a 15-7, major-decision win over Brandon Schorr at 149. The win was his first bonus-point win of the season, and he improved to 76-50 in his college career.

Grant Parker (JR, Onalaska, Wis.) improved to 19-9 on the season with a 15-7, major-decision win over T.J. Fulton at 157, his fourth major decision win of the year. He is now 51-41 in his collegiate career with 15 bonus-point wins (nine pins, one technical fall, five major decisions).

James Goman (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Trinity-River Ridge HS) opened the match with a 6-2 win over John Wells at 125, Brady McFarland (FY, Windlake, Wis./Muskego HS) scored a 9-6 win over Teddy Erickson at 165, and Sebastian Larson (SO, River Falls, Wis.) claimed an 8-1 win over Luke Dodd at 184. Goman is now 12-13 on the season, McFarland is 10-4, and Larson is 16-9.

The lone win for Saint John’s in the dual came from No. 7-ranked Ben Henle, who claimed an 11-3, major-decision win over Augsburg’s Aaron Wilson (FY, Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis HS).

Both teams will compete at the Saint John’s North Country Open next Saturday (1/30) at 9 a.m.
