WWE star John Cena said Monday morning on NBC’s “Today” show that he felt he was ready to get back in the ring last month, but doctors would not clear him until May.

Cena jokingly previewed “mayhem” when he returns to WWE TV on Memorial Day Raw on Monday, May 30 on USA Network.

“I was ready last month. I made a sneak appearance at WrestleMania at the beginning of April. I’m ready to go. I’ve been away too long,” Cena said.

Cena recapped filming “American Grit” at the end of 2015, injuring his shoulder immediately when he returned to WWE costing him five months, and now it’s added up to more than half-a-year away from WWE television.

“I’ve basically been away from the ring for seven months and I’m ready to get back on Memorial Day,” he said after recapping how he finished his rehab in five months.

Tamron, the 9:00 a.m. hour co-host, tried to bring Cena down to earth noting he’s a human being, not a real-life super-hero, so he has to be careful about rushing back to the ring after doctors told him 6-9 months of recovery.

Cena reasoned that doctors make that estimate based on a normal person’s recovery time doing rehab three times per week. Whereas, he’s a seasoned athlete and he did the rehab up to three times per day.

“It’s a matter of doing the work. Doctors and surgeons all agree that I’m ready to go,” Cena said.
