Suspicious Package Sent To Ted Cruz Campaign Office

HOUSTON, TX — Two people have been transported to Houston area hospitals after coming in contact with an unknown substance mailed in a package to 3200 Southwest Freeway Tuesday morning. The package was sent to Sen. Ted Cruz’s campaign office, campaign spokeswoman Emily Miller told Patch.

The call about a suspicious package was received by the Houston Police Department at 10:30 a.m., HPD spokesman spokesman Kese Smith told Patch.

The two people transported to the hospital did not work with the campaign, Miller said.

“The 9th floor of the Phoenix Tower has been evacuated as HFD HazMat is responding to the scene working to determine the nature of the substance,” Houston Fire Department tweeted at 11:56 a.m.

According to a live video feed from the scene provided by ABC13, the FBI is taking over the investigation as of 12:37 p.m., according to an HPD officer at the scene. The FBI has taken the letter to a lab to be tested though initial tests indicate the substance was not toxic. This was further confirmed by HFD on Twitter at 12:41 p.m. The evacuation order has also been lifted.

The mail facility servicing the Pentagon received a package Monday containing ricin, a highly potent toxin. It is unclear at this time if there is any connection between both packages.
