EU: Qaddafi’s death marks end of ‘despotism’
EU leaders call for a “broad-based reconciliation process” following the death of the former Libyan leader.
European Union officials have welcomed the reported capture and possible death of Muammar Qaddafi, Libya’s former leader.
Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, said that, if the reports prove accurate, the death of Qaddafi would allow Libya to put behind it “an era of despotism and repression”.
In a statement, they called on Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) to “pursue a broad-based reconciliation process” as part of its efforts to form an interim government tasked with leading the country until national elections can be held.
The NTC, which organised the rebel movement against Qaddafi, said today (20 October) that Qaddafi had been captured and was possibly dead.
Qaddafi’s regime fell two months ago after rebel forces stormed and took the capital city of Tripoli.
