Chandan Mukherjee’s family watched in horror as a sudden wave crashed into the guard wall of the Biswa Bangla Udyan beach in Old Digha and pulled him into the gurgling waters. Minutes before, eyewitnesses said, Mukherjee had been warned by life-guards (nulias) not to climb the guard wall or descend on the boulders as the sea was rough during high tide.
