Designer Philipp Plein Fat Shamed a Style Editor Who Wrote a Critical Review of His Fashion Show
German fashion designer Philipp Plein, best known for putting on boundary-pushing, star-studded runway shows, is coming under fire for attacking and fat-shaming a fashion editor who wrote a critical review of his Fall 2019 show.
In her lengthy review for Fashionista, writer Alexandra Mondalek said she felt “hustled, scammed and bamboozled into believing Kanye West would perform” at Plein’s “dinner show event” and thought the entire Fall 2019 collection was “more disappointing” than the entire “disorganized black tie dinner” itself.
Mondalek went on to explain that “while everyone invited was under the impression it was a seated dinner, there was seating for, at most, two-thirds of the guests,” which included celebrities including Billy Porter, Paris Hilton, Jonathan Cheban and Coco Rocha. Ultimately, she called the Philipp Plein brand a “tacky joke” and thought “it’s best we leave it behind altogether.”
Not long after Mondalek’s review went live, Plein took it upon himself to slam her in a series of harsh, fat-shaming posts on his Instagram Story, which the editor swiftly screenshotted and shared herself on social media. “Oh my god I’m getting fat shamed by Philipp Plein on Instagram,” Mondalek tweeted.

Plein posted a screenshot of a series of live tweets Mondalek posted during his fashion show and sarcastically accused her of not being a trustworthy reporter. “I like it when journalists are objective and trustworthy,” the designer wrote. Mondalek replied, “On his Instagram stories, Plein (who has 1.6M followers) decided to fat shame me and call into question my journalistic integrity.”
He also reposted an old photo of the fashion editor on his Instagram Story and captioned it, “Next time I make sure that you will get enough food ! I promise ……”

“He found this photo of me on BFA 25 lbs ago,” Mondalek then said as she shared it.
Plein also confused the fashion editor with Amanda Bynes by posting a photo of the actress. “Next time you want a free meal babe show up on time at the show…….”

Mondalek slammed the designer on both Instagram and Twitter for his disparaging remarks. “Talk about professionalism! Plein attacked me on such a disgusting personal level because I said his event was mishandled + his clothes are ugly,” the editor wrote. “Body shaming is NEVER ok and especially not from someone with a platform like his.”
She also defended her editorial judgment by explaining when she reviewed Plein’s fashion show in 2017, her opinions were not as harsh.
Mondalek added, “I hope you’re proud of yourself for fat-shaming someone who struggles with body image anyway. And for what it’s worth, I was on time.”
PEOPLE has reached out to Plein for comment. He has yet to make a statement on his controversial remarks.
